PIM Software

Doing some searching it seems to have been awhile since PIM (personal information management) software has been discussed.

I have been using treepad (short time)

and see some pluses and minues to it and was just wondering at everyone elses experiences before I get too much time invested.

I co-worker of mine kept complaining about the difficulty to keep track of stuff...addresses, links, documents, etc...so, I started to browse for PIMs...found several: rich-text based, wiki-style, etc. At the end, I decided that the most convenient one was KeepNote, for one major reason.

First of all, KeepNote is free; o.k., so it Treepad and others.
KeepNote has just as many features as other PIMS and maybe even some more, as far as what can be included in-line right there inside the article itself.

So, as far as features, KeepNote is very very complete.

But the major reason why I decided for KeepNote is because it does not have its own file format at all, i.e., there is no such thing as a KeepNote file.

For example, should Treepad become obsolete, unsupported, and should you get a new computer where you can no longer install Treepad....how in the world are you going to access your Treepad files? is the information there lost forever?

KeepNote, on the other hand, keeps everything in regular files. The tree hierarchy itself is simply a hierarchy of folders (or directories). Then, the content of articles are simply regular files or pictures or whatever....KeepNote simply helps in organizing itself using additional xml files...other than that, should KeepNote disappear, you wouldn't even notice because your data is still there and totally accessible.

Go ahead, give it a try...all you have to do is assign some parent directory as the root for a given notebook and everything will stored there and sub-folders will automatically be created when you add children to your tree, etc...then, take a look at the file system itself and you will see what you have created right there and should be readable without KeepNote.
