Hi All,

We are currently designing concrete piles in accordance with American Standards ASCE 7-10, ACI 318 and ACI 543. We are considering both inertia loads from our structure and kinematic loads acting on the pile itself under a seismic event.

The structure design is for a Design Event (DE) earthquake. For this design in accordance with ASCE 7-10, a number of response modification factors are added to allow for the structures ability to take the load (dissipate) in certain areas. The question is, if we have been asked to design piles to a DE event, do we take the loads from the structure with these modification factors added or without them?

Many thanks for your help in advance,

Tim

Do not apply those factors to the piles and the cap must be capacity protected.
