Pile Cap and Suspended Slab Construction

Dear All,

I have a pile supported building that has a single level basement. The top of the basement slab is 600mm below the water table. I've considered that the basement slab and ground beams are integral with the pile caps to minimize the depth of excavation. The pile cap is 1000mm deep and the slab is 300mm thick. I am currently reviewing the construction sequence and would appreciate comments on the proposed method.

The excavation for the basement will be to base of pile cap. This is required to facilitate the micro pile installation which is being driven with a large excavator with a hammer. Establishing a formation level to the the top of the pile caps and then excavating for the individual caps and grade beams looked difficult due to space limitations and manoeuvrability of the excavator.

My initial thought is that the pile cap and grade beams will be cast in two pours with the first casting to a height of 700mm and then the site backfilled to that level. The rebar and from the pile cap and grade beams will protrude from this first pour to facilitate connection of the second pour which is essentially the thickness of the slab. The ground water has a high chloride content. Our waterproofing will be achieved using an integral compound added to the plastic concrete. The construction joint between the two pours will be treated with a cementitious waterproofing compound.

Any thoughts on this sequence?

Why do you need to backfill in and around the grade beams and pile caps if the slab is structural? Seems difficult to me and also tough to get compaction.

Seems like this type of condition usually has a serious dewatering effort to allow the temporary excavation of the pile caps and slab (sort of a trenched footing system approach) and then
place steel and all the concrete at once.
