Hi, I have a question about grade beam, pile cap and pile connection. Is the connection between the pile and pile cap supposed to be pinned or fixed? As I understand, we do not want to transfer moment on foundation. If pinned, what kind of reinforcement detailing would be warranted at the pile-pile cap connection?

Appreciate your help.

Thanks,

it depends on how you are designing for the load. normally i would suggest pinned although to my mind most detailing would more likely allow some moment transfer. typical detail for a pinned head would be one or two bars projected up into the cap. unless its a precast segmental pile ot steel tube with cap plate. or h pile. SO to answer the question it depends on how your dealing with loads and the type of pile.

generally agree mike but sometimes we do. can save piles
