Pigment

We currently use a resin formula for our composite products. The formula is density driven for each component. We are trying to decide if we can safely remove the pigment so we can have a better look at potential defects for testing purposes. Could anyone comment on whether or not this is advisable. My concern is will the removal of the pigment effect the properties of the other additives. Thanks

The most I can tell you is it is epoxy

Pigment is a word used to describe a multitude of materials with just as many functions. For example, carbon black can be used as a pigment to improve resistance to ultraviolet radiation, or for anti-static properties. Other pigments are just colorants for appearance. If you cannot provide more information, then the answer to whether or not this is advisable is "it depends".

Our pigment is used for coloration only. I was told that the formula performance and balance, depend on the ratio between each chemical remaining true. And that removal or alteration of any one could change how the others react. I am a process engineer so the chemistry thing is well outside my discipline so I am just trying to get some basic understanding.

Pigment particles act as stress concentrators so removing it is very likely to improve properties, specifically impact resistance and elongation to break.

It is extremely unlikely there would be a problem, although not impossible. It is very important to keep the ratios of reactive ingredients the same.
