A 316 SS piping 2" system needs to have a constant pigging operation. It's producing blended products which xylene is a main ingredient. The pipework is earthed to standards, The pig is a synthetic with a weighted inner. The pig needs to be propelled by a gas but may incur some aerosol effect when passing junctions etc, causing the propellant to have a small amount of xylene mixed into it.

My question is, is air or N my propellant given all Atex considerations are in place?

You may also consider other hydrocarbons as propellant. Propane and natural gas are both less expensive than nitrogen.
