We have investigated with our "elder" colleages but could not find photos.

The biggest pipe burst event due to water hammer was in our memory the FOSTAD water pumping system in Egypt where around 1975 a DN 600 swing check behind a KSB pump bursted up the pipe like a sausage.

I have contacted KSB, but nobody had some photos on file.

- By the way, the problem was solved with a nozzle type non-slam check valve sold by Mannesmann Demag nowadays available at Noreva.

stanier,
I have no photos I can tie directly to an "event", which I take to mean some specific component failure or horrible design flaw.

But I do have photos of pipe bursts due to what I would call pressure transients or surges that I linked directly to poor hydraulic design. All are PVC bursts.

I am not sure what your paper is going to be used for. I am willing to let you download the images if your paper is not going to be published formally, just shared within your company or amongst collegues. I need these photos myself for future publishing. The link someone gave above has my photos in it.

Try contacting Gerald Moreland of Stoner Associates in Houston - he gives a lecture on waterhammer failures with some impressive photos.

Hi Pumpdesigner. Thanks for the offer. My paper was intended to be published and presented to my peers at The Institution of Engineers Australia, The Institution of Mechanical Engineers Sydney Branch and Sydney Water.

There in lies the problem. No one wants their failures aired in public. It would appear that the insurance companies have bound up the evidence.
