PERIOD determination

Hello
i just want to ask how can we define how fast is a certain period is in earthquake?

like having a 0.0390 seconds or like that
what is the equivalent of it on richter scale?
if theres an equivalent of it on richter scale

from what i understand the period came from a certain wave (like P or S waves) although i just want to know the equivalent of it.

would a lateral acceleration define a period (of oscilation) ?

richter scale is more in terms of lateral displacement, no ?

not sure how "they" go from a seimsograph trace to a richter scale, but the period is clearly on the trace (peak-to-peak).

not sure how useful period is (unless you're designing a building and want to define a required natural frequency of the building to minimise siesmic effects). 'cause it's only 1/2 the story of the power of the event. i think you can say the same with lateral displacement (how quickly did it occur ?).

ASCE 7 (if you're in the USA) has definitions of ground motion to period relationships. I'd recommend starting there. The Richter scale is not used for design. A good description is available in Wikipedia.

The period of an earthquake is not related to the intensity. The richter scale measures the amount of energy released during the seismic event. The period measures the length of the S wave. These are unrelated and independent of each other.
