Hi,

I'm working on a "green" home design and am seeking formula(s) and information on evaluating the performance of ERV's. I have found ARI 1060 2005. I will be monitoring this unit for airflows temps at all ports and will be able to determine the power draw when operating. I was hoping that I would not have to "somehow" monitor the External Static Pressure or Total Static Pressure of this unit when operating to get this data. Is there a method to determine perfomance based on power input, temp diffs, CFM ratings, and a general assumption of ESP?

Hi StoryLoops,

Go back to your basics. If you have reliable CFM and enthalpy (not just dry-bulb temperature, you need humidity too) in all of your airstreams, the calculations are straightforward. Just add up the total heat in each stream to determine the net amount recovered.

IMHO, static pressure won't be high enough to change the density of the air enough to matter, I don't think -- after all, your flow measurement will only have two significant digits at most. But, if you're already measuring flow, you must have both static and total pressures available too if you want to do the density-tweaking correction.

Good on ya,

Goober Dave
