I am looking for an acceptable o-ring material to be used is a mechanical seal made of zirconium metals for a sulfuric acid application. The process is sulfuric acid (67% concentration) at a temperature 250F. I have tried various componds (Kalrez 6375 and Viton)with marginal success. I am currently using Chemraz 615 based on a recommendation from Greene Tweed. The o-ring itself actually performs pretty well. The issue is that the zirconium parts are becoming corroded in the areas under the o-rings that are also in contact with sulfuric acid. I understand that in sulfuric acid applications, zirconium corrosion rates are drastically affected by the presence of fluoride ions. Is there some other elastomer compound (not necessarily a perflouroelaster) that can handle hot sulfuric acid and not corrode zirconium at the same time?

You might try UHMWPE O-Rings. There are available from Parker.
