Hi Engr Tips Forum,

Do people have any technical resources for pedestrian bridges in the USA (books, guides, etc.)? I want to know more about the technical side of bridge design and understand more for myself. I am a junior engineer, working under SE's and PE's (and no, I am not designing bridges by myself) but I want to learn more about this topic. It is also something that we did not learn much about in grad school.

Thanks in advance!

Edit* I know there are resources on the FAQ but I was hoping for free resources.

Goose, a lot of pedestrian bridges are prefabricated. They come to the jobsite already preassembled, and you set it on the top of the bridge abutment with a large crane. That way they only have to close the road below only a few hours. Look at this company for example. I know I didn't really answer your question.

Doesn't AASHTO have a pedestrian bridge addendum to the LRFD Bridge Design Manual? I used it several years ago for a pedestrian bridge over a tidal marsh with ambulance loading. Don't have a copy personally, though.

Yes, although I was of the impression it was more of a standalone document. Doubt it's free.

Not an addendum but AASHTO publishes the LRFD Guide Specifications for the Design of Pedestrian Bridges. The free table of contents can be found here:
