Maui;
I took the exam last October (2003) and passed. This is a relatively difficult exam, but given appropriate study time, you should pass. I devoted about 1 month of intense study - 4 evenings per week. Review in particular the reference books on Materials Transport (Gaskell's book and the TMS book by Geiger and Poiter). Also review Mechanical Metallurgy by Dieter, and Hertzberg's book, as well.
Having taken the exam last year, I would highly recommend bringing the reference books mentioned in the TMS Study guide. The ASM Metals Handbook, Desk Edition is an absolute requirement. You will need this to look-up particular data for problems related to heat treatment and environmental response.
Know your metallurgical thermodynamics. I would suggest bringing Gaskell's book on Metallurgical Thermodynamics. I can assure you there will be a problem on metallurgical thermo, heat transfer (condutive/convective) and diffusion (carburization), oxidation in the principles section of the exam. I would suggest having the reference book by Poiter and Geiger on Materials Transport. This book will be very handy for specific problems regarding diffusion and oxidation kinetics.
GOOD LUCK
