Pattern along datum curve

Does anybody knows how to pattern along a datum curve? Any help will be greatly appreciated thank you.

Using WF4.0 you have a new option for patterning allong a curve. But for the past 10 years users had to create an aproximate curve ontop of a datum curve for patterning. This aproximate curve is nessessary because the sketched feature needs to look at the curve (or a point on the curve) and where two curves join the pattern will fail.
