Part access denied

We have just added a second user. If one of us has an assembly open and the other tries to open a part used in the assembly, there is an access denied warning.

I might be missing a setting and I have to admit my understanding of SW files leaves something to be desired. I went to both computers and under options/system set these: (1) in collaboration, set to enable multi user environment, and (2) in external references, set to allow multiple contexts for parts. Is there something else?

Another thought is I might want to allow the other guy to look at parts but block him from making changes. Can that be done?

Also in Help file under "Collaboration > Multi-User Environment" ;

In Tools, Options, System Options, External References:

To allow other users to work on components while you have an assembly open, select Open referenced documents with read-only access.

To prevent a message box from appearing whenever you make a document read-only, select Don't prompt to save read-only referenced documents (discard changes).

(2) in external references, set to allow multiple contexts for parts.

This one is not recommended for best practices. It does have it's uses but should be avoided whenever possible. Too many cross-refs will eventually create problems.

No, at least I don't think I do. I will do some searching. If it is something you have to pay for then it is not likely that we would have it or be able to get it.

If you have SolidWorks Professional or above then you have it.

We currently have 3 "active" users without any PDM system in use.

Under collaboration, we do not have the mutli-user environment enabled.

Also under external references, multiple contexts are not allowed and when check the "Don't prompt to save read-only ....(discard changes)" box. You dont' need to know everytime you have had read-only access to a part. Many times you will always have a common nut or bolt open as read-only. You're not really working on that part, so why be bothered when saving the assembly you are working on.

Full access is given to the first user to open the file. If a second user accesses either a part used in an assembly, it automatially opens with read-only access. If user2 wants to open a part user already has open, SW will prompt you.

If the second user needs to make changes to a part the first user has open, when asked to release control, the first user grants control to the second user via his FILE - RELOAD command where he can now open the desired part as read-only so user2 can gain full control.
