Paper coatings?

Does any one know about the paper coatings? Mostly I am looking for the various uses of the paper coatings (beyond those like smoothing, brightness enhancing,...). Also, the various trends in these coatings like the various changes these coatings went through since their first use and the reasons and the benefits behind the change. Also, the problems with the recent coatings.
