Optimized Battery Location for Heavy Construction Equipment

Can anyone help? We need a snapshot on safely optimizing a start-battery's physical location in a diesel-powered excavator. Our concerns are out-gassing, shorting due to dirt and/or debris build-ups, normal maintenance/replacement issues, et cetera. Are there OSHA, IEC, ANSI, IOS standards that apply or is this another of the ambiguous (gray) areas?
