In synchronous modelling what is optimize face and how does it work?

While in the Optimize Face dialog, press the 'F1' key and you'll be taken to the NX Help document for this function.

As noted on the popup, NX will attempt to simplify / replace the underlying math of the face, if possible, merge faces if possible, tighten tolerances , identify blend faces etc.

An example of this , some cad systems model cylindrical faces as two 180 degree halves, If there in the imported model are two adjacent faces which both are of the type "cylindrical" , same center axis, same radius, NX can merge these into 1 cylindrical face.

another example, If the optimize face function finds a tangent continuous transition face between two faces, NX will try verify if this is a blend or not, if the cross section shape is close to circular, It can be classified as a blend. ( maybe the math of that face is also changed into a NX Blend.)

Typically you use the optimize face on imported data to make it more "NX native" and thereby easier to edit.

Tomas

It's a nice function but be careful using it. I have seen it change the model more so than Join Face. I recommend trying it out but keep a close eye on the result.

I should have said IMO it does behave differently than Join Face for face removal. The doc on it is somewhat sparse so you'll have to check it out on a model for specific behavior.
