We are working for a couple of clients in Middle East
to install On-line Sodium Analyzers in their steam
circuit. The sodium analyzer is principally meant to
monitor steam purity. We understand that such analyzers are installed in power plants and process industries to monitor High pressure steam using a conditioning unit that converts steam into water before feeding into the analyzers.

It is requested if some colleagues who are using the
sodium analyzers for the above intended purpose can
share their experiences. Input from colleagues will be greatly appreciated.

The biggest problem in measuring trace amounts of impurities in high presssure, superheated steam is getting a representative sample. I would refer you Jonas, Inc. for the EPRI Isokinetic Sampling Nozzles. Their web address is
The next part of the equation is balancing the sample line lengths and diameters with maintaining sample integrity. You don't want the entrained matter depositing on the sample lines. Make sure you keep the flow turbulent and avoid sharp turns.

Next you need to cool the sample down to 100 - 125 deg F. Then you let the pressure down, if you let the pressure down first then cool the particulate matter will plate out in the pressure reducing valve. The preferred valve for tis service is a rod-and-tube valve design. The final step is cooling to 77 +/- 0.5 deg F. The secondary cooling step will require a chilled water system. Be sure to spec a hot gas bypass valve on the chiller to modulate chilling loads.
