I have five years experience with the electrical discipline in the oil & gas industry, but I want to upgrade myself in the intrumentation discipline.

Can You refer to any guidelines or books?

Try ISA.org, they have programs for Certified Instrumentation Technicians and Automation Professionals, their website have a lot of info, links and books for sale.

Depending on what area you're in, some community and local colleges offer courses in instrumentation.
