Hi Guys,

Our company ha started trialling standalone simulation software for the extrusion business.
We do all out design and manufacture with NX6 currently and slowly migrating to NX 10.

The simulation software requires a stp file. Problems arise with errors occurring on the model
when trying to apply the mesh.(e.g. triangulation errors) When talking to the software technicians they reply with our software can repair the
geometry. The software they use is SpaceClaim. I am sure NX can produce clean models ready for simulation but
I am having trouble what is requires? Is there any tips on blends and face sizes??? I have found the Heal Geometry
export which helps a lot but not quite error free. Any help/advice would be great

What are you trying to analyze? Do you have a picture? What are the loads and boundary conditions?

Hi Paul,

Sounds like meshing problem due to dirty CAD data. Heal geometry is one option. Other options are Optimize Face (from synchronous modeling toolbar) but this command is not available in NX6. Another diagnosis you should try is Menu > Analysis > Examine Geometry... When doing Examine Geometry, make sure you check all Objects (especially Face Intersections, and Self-Intersection). Then Click on the Examine Geometry button below the dialog box. If there is error result in Face Intersections and Self-Intersection, most probably you will have meshing problem...

They say that their software can repair the geometry, -is this the same people providing the simulation software ?
If so, why don't they ?

Step files normally produce pretty clean data. Step is a "neutral file format", which gives that there are 2 translations,
1 translation from NX to stp and 1 from stp to that other system, it might equally well be that other system that produces the problems.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Tuw is on the money,, the problem is VERY dirty cad data cause by bad modelling techniques. I always thought this was the case.
I remodelled the parts in NX 10 making sure the geometry is clean. I run the Optimize face app on the model and also exported the part as a healed body and all worked extremely well.

What does Optimize face do that heal geometry doesn't??? or vice versa??

We are simulating an aluminium extrusion die. The Simulation program is called QForm.

Yes the same people have there own modelling software as well. They obviously are trying to sell us that, as well as the simulation program.
They are pushing a cad program called SpaceClaim. They claim it is the best program out there that can repair/prepare 3d models for simulation.
I have looked at SpaceClaim and there repair tools are very similar to the synchronous tools in NX.

In the end I got the required results, Now I need to train the other designers to produce clean models.
