i'm an erector with just enough smarts to know that a W24x68x9'3 long requires more than 6 - 3/4 bolts each end. but i need to know my formula is correct. went to school to be a P.E but quit to play pro baseball. yes i'm stupid. can anyone help me?

Is that 9'-3" or 93'-0"?

For the 9' beam it may be that the depth and size are not really required and thus, the number of bolts can be less....but for a 93' long beam...the 24" depth seems a bit tad low....

the beam length is 9'3". it is a W24x68. this beam is supporting hollow core plank. the columns are hss8x8x3/8x12'-8". my calcs show, this beam section at this length should have 11.91 bolts per end. again, i think i know more than i may. the details show shear tabs on the columns with 6 bolts per end. these bolts are 3/4 a325. not t.c bolts. thank you for your cooperation this evening.

It looks like you're making an assumption about the loading to arrive at 11.91 bolts. How did you figure the load? You may have made an assumption the engineer didn't make.

I think releets is using the maximum possible safe load on the beam to get an end reaction. The number of bolts in a connection CAN be based on the max. beam capacity, but many times is not.

releets,

I would just highlight this to the engineer of record and leave it at that.

You may be right, but it could also only require 6 bolts as noted above.

As a minimum, your clip angle length should not be less than T/2 for rotational stability. Actual load may require more bolts. Cloud it and let the EOR tell you how many bolts are needed.
