New Ideas for Conc Street Repair/Replace

I work for the engineering dept for a large county in Texas. i have just been tasked with finding new and inventive ways of repairing and/or replacing fairly old conc pavement which is beginning to crack/fail.

most of the pvmt we are looking at is for major thoroughfares, and consist of 8-10" conc.

the maintenence entities are not satisfied with the current methods of asphalt overlays or total replacements, so they are looking to us to come up with some alternatives with main consideration to maintaining a high level of traffic flow

anybody know of any good ideas/solutions to conc pvmt repair that you have either seen or done.

you need to determine why the concrete failed before you can propose any method of repair

Asphalt overlays on concrete do not perform well unless significant preparation is done. I would suggest rubbleizing the concrete then doing an asphalt overly. Inexpensive and quite.

Are these urban/suburban roads, or can you raise with the profile? If you have to maintain the same profile, you're kinda stuck with thin overlays or reconstruction.

If you can raise the grade a few inches, you can look into rubblizing or white-topping.

So, to expand on cvg's comment, do you think the pavements have just reached their ESAL limit, or is something else going on? Incompressibles in the joints on 100 degree days? Houston gumbo underneath?

i havent really gotten any specifics or actual roads that i could go check out...just looking for ideas. so thanks a lot for these. i ahev spent soem good Google time and like some of these options. now just time to see if the precinct likes them as well.

If you can raise the grade, look at unbonded concrete. Call MNDOT about their projects on I-35 last year.
