I had two thoughts.
The first one was along some of the lines already mentioned; A good idea but is it the best technology to move a large airplane. Wheel motors, or hydraulics perhaps.
The other thought was WOW.
This may quietly disappear or it may be the next big step after VFDs and build on the capabilities of the VFD. With a VFD, we have a system that can vary both the voltage and the frequency of a motor. With this system and VFD technology we have a system where the VFD based control can seamlessly reconnect the internal winding groups in the motor as it is running.
I think that torque will still be pretty much dependent on frame size, but with the reconnection you can stay close to the optimum frequency regardless of the speed. Just reconnect for the appropriate speed range.
It will be interesting to see if the benefits outweigh the complexity.
