Need help modeling complex shape.

Hi, need a bit of help trying to model the below shape, specifically the area outlined in black.

Unsure if I should do this with surfaces (I'm not great at surfaces) or start with solid block and extrude away as required. Particularly need help with the highlighted area and how it bends and curves into its different directions.

Below is what I have attempted thus far in solid body and surfaces.

Any help, or links to videos/forums on similar models would be appreciated.
