Need explanation of nail and bolt connections from NDS 5

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good text book reference (or other reference material) to help explain the ins and outs of mechanical connections from NDS 2001?
I'm particularly interested in nailed and bolted connections but I guess screwed connections would be good too. I know it is all in the NDS but I have a hard time decifering which mode will apply and I hate to calculate each different equation to figure out which one is the controling one.
Any good references for this would be appreciated.

"Design of Wood Structures" by Breyer, Fridley, Pollock and Cobeen does an excellent job of covering connections.

For most cases you don't have to calculate the controlling mode, the tables have done that for you....then you apply your adjustment factors to the table value.

There is a Commentary for the 1997 & 2005 NDS. The information in the Commentary for the 2005 NDS for the most part would apply to the 2001 NDS.

I think you can down load the 2005 Commentary from AFPA's web site.
