NDE on ASME BPVC Section I Defect Repairs

Section PW-40.3.2 of ASME BPVC Section I - 2021 states, in pertinent part, “The defect shall be removed, and the groove reexmined to verify defect removal, using either the magnetic particle or the liquid penetrant examination methods.”

Does this mean magnetic particle or liquid penetrant examination is required for “defect removal” even though magnetic particle or liquid penetrant examination is not required for the original weld?
