does anyone know of a requirement to separate the ground cable and the med. voltage cables in a trench?

I don't think it could be such a requirement. If the trench is filled [sand, earth]and if the armor is accessible a corrosion phenomenon
may occur. A lead [or tin] covered copper grounding cable may be useful in this case.
