We have a couple of seats of SW04. When 1 person opens an assembly (Assem1) the parts and subassemblies in it become their "property" according to SW - only they have write access. If someone else opens another assembly (assem2) hat also contains some of the parts from Assem1, those parts in Assem2 are surpressed and cannot be unsurpressed until Assem2 is opened without Assem1 being opened. What I'd like is to have Assem1 open and if Assem2 is opened, have te shared parts "unsupressable" but read-only. I'm sure I've done this in the past with older versions of SW so I must be missing an option setting somewhere.

Any Suggestions?

I believe PDMWorks 2005 will allow this. Are you using PDMWorks?

I'm not using PDMWorks currently. I would think that SW would be smart enough to be allow parts and/or assemblies to be opened by multiple users with only the first user having write access. I'd be disappointed if I had to purchase more software. Like I said, I've used SW since the beginning and I think it can be done with the proper settings. If not, then I'll have to look at other solutions.

Try this
Go to Tools, Options, System Options, External References and check the box that says "Open referenced documents with read-only access" on each machine.

You will have to Reload a part (right-click option) without the read-only setting in order to make changes though.
