Hey Ya'll-
I am being tasked with changing out all of the RedHat 7.3 computers in one of our labs to run Debian. I have been an avid Debian user for the past 2 years now, and absolutely love the way it is set up. you cant beat the way apt-get performs.
Anyway, I have a dilemma. I have never set up a multi-user lab before. I have to maintain all of the existing accounts. Additionally, The current accounts are using NIS on a central computer, and each user's home directory is stored on one of 16 File servers, which also happen to be machines that are to be re-installed. Even more so, we are to switch the NIS over to LDAP + Kerberos for user authentication etc. There are some Sun machine sin the lab currently that are not going to get debian and will keep solaris. I need to switch the NIS to LDAP + Kerberos for them as well. One thing that will make things easier is that there are only 3 different hardware configurations used in the lab, so It is potentially reasonable to ghost the machines.
Has anyone out there done anything remotely similar, or have any suggestions as to the best way to do this? Currently I am looking at possibly doing an NFS install, however, I would like to automate the process, and also set up some machine specific settings such as host name etc. on the fly.
Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
