I've been informed that the latest worm/virus Msblast, or LuvSan, can be spread through an excel spreadsheet. Does anyone know how this can be spotted in the spreadsheet without being infected, or which spreadsheets may have been the cause? I had this virus on my PC and spotted it using TaskManager but I'm unsure of the source.

Update your virus definitions and run a virus scan on your system.

Removal of the virus was no problem. The source was the problem, but our IT people say it can come from excel spreadsheets, the tv news says it comes through a port on your computer. Can you detect a virus/worm in a spreadsheet using a virus scan?

So far as I am aware your IT department is wrong. msblast installs itself directly over the internet by checking for open ports, and then installing a copy of itself. They may be CMA ing, since the relevant ports should not have been left open anyway, except for a few cases, and a patch has been available for several weeks.

Yes, Norton AntiVirus (and I assume all its competitors) will find virii in spreadsheets, if you ask them to. Many people only scan .exe and .com and .dll files (for good reasons), but you can run a virus check on every single file on your disk, if you want to.
