Our electric motor repair shop installs a lot of pinions, we mount the pinion cold by placing it on the taper shaft by hand. Then we measure the COLD position of the pinion using a depth gage. We then remove the pinion and heat in the oven to 213F install pinion and measure pinion advance.
The pinion temperature is indicated as a temperature difference between the shaft and pinion. This temperature difference is estimated only and can be adjusted to maintain the specified advance if it is available.
Does anyone know where I can get more detailed infromation on this subject or specified advance specs for different sizes of pinions?
I have ask other repair facilities and one major OEM said they have never heard of COLD/HOT advance and just install pinions cold ?
