I was wondering if anyone knew of a small 1 hp DC motor that is designed to work as a motor and when not being used as a motor could funtion as a generator. If not do you know of a small generator or alternater out there.

Most 800W (1 HP) brushless DC motor can be used as generator. Depends on your speed control electronics. Look for on Google liike "800W scooter motor" "scooter motor control" etc.

Thanks alexit. I was wondering if there where any specs or anyway of determining how much power a motor could generate. Thanks

The windings don't really know, or care, whether the electric machine absorbs or supplies torque, but they really do care what current they carry. So the maximum generator power is equal to the maximum motor power if the terminal voltage is held constant.
