I'm reading through Chapter 7, Moment Resisting Foundations, Example 7.1 in Alexander Newman's "Foundation and Anchor Design Guide for Metal Building systems" and he calculates the Section Modulus "S" as S = (b*L²)/6. b = width, L = length. In his example, the width is 4 feet, and length is 9 feet. He even writes out the equation in numbers: S = (4 * 9²) / 6 but he states the answer is 546 ft³. My math results in 54 ft³. I can't figure out what I'm missing as his answer makes the design work, my answer it doesn't check or exceeds the soil bearing capacity. Seems the units are all feet and my online searching is the equation is correct for a rectangular footer. I can't figure out how he's getting 546 ft³ for his S. Any help is appreciated!

Probably a typo in your edition. I have the 3rd edition and it's 54ft3.
