If a silicate melt contains 50 mol% H2O then does this mean that half the volume is water?

No, it means half the molecules is water.

Good luck,
Latexman

Technically, the glass is always full - 1/2 air and 1/2 water.

The gross assumption that mol % and volume % are the same only approaches being useful in gases.

"Belief" is the acceptance of an hypotheses in the absence of data.
"Prejudice" is having an opinion not supported by the preponderance of the data.
"Knowledge" is only found through the accumulation and analysis of data.
The plural of anecdote is not "data"

Only if the other 50% of the substance has the same molecular weight as H2O... Latexman has it spot on.

What is in the other half?

My motto: Learn something new every day

Also: There's usually a good reason why everyone does it that way
