Does anyone know if the specifications for this machine 50 years ago are the same as the current specifications?

Also, what equivalent hammer drop height to use in the Hiley formula?

I've got the old (50 yr)piling records and am trying to determine capacity.

Thanks, John

MKT 9B3 Double Acting Steam/Air Hammer Specs:

Rated Energy: 8750 foot pounds
Strokes per Minute: 145
Stroke Length at Rated Energy: 17 inches
Weigh of Striking Parts: 1600 pounds
Total Weight of Hammer: 7000 pounds

This information is from page 64 of "Bethlehem Steel H Piles", a .pdf for free download at this page of my website:

Of course the true performance of a double acting hammer is very sensitive to the air flow, air pressure supplied, and mechanical condition of the hammer. This is because a double acting hammer gets significant energy from the downward acceleration provided by the compressed air. For example, in the case of the MKT 9B3, 2267 ft. pounds comes from gravity (17 inches x 1600 pounds). The remaining 6483 ft. lb. is from compressed air action.

A single acting hammer has a more predictable energy output since good, old dependable gravity alone provides the ram's downward acceleration.

Sorry, can't help you with the equivalent Hiley formula rating.

Thanks SRE

That specification is identical to the current specs.
