does anybody know of a better type of packing to use when pumping 16.8 # salt saturated l/m to a rig. we have the chesterton packing in the can, pre cut, it seems to be working fine small drip for around a 1000 bbls then fails no amount of tighting or grease will stop the product from pouring out. if anybody has any ideas as to how to keep mud in the pump instead of outside i would appreciate it !!!

You could look into converting to a Mechanical Seal.
If you are reallystuck with packed what about graphite tape
 
Try compressing the packing less severely at startup.
You want a bigger drip or a fine stream, maybe a couple of coffee cups a minute for a big packing. Keep track of the leak rate and the service life, and tighten the gland with caution.
