Mirror A Design 1

I have been given a project that requires an assembly of a tool. Once the tool is finished, another tool is required that will be a mirror image of the first. Is there a way to mirror the assembly models and remain associative? (the drawing will probably have to be mirrored as well)

Any suggestions welcome.

I may be misunderstanding, but I believe engmaster is looking to mirror an entire assembly to a new assembly, keeping mates, etc. I don't think that's possible. You can create the mirrored parts and have them remain linked to the original part, but I think you'll have to build the new assembly and create the new drawing from scratch.

I know how to mirror individual models thanks to swx help. I guess I will just have to mirror components, re-assemble, and create new drawings.

Actually you can mirror an assembly and mirror the parts within the assembly. You will have to re-mate the parts in the mirrored assembly, but everything will be in place already.

1. Make a new assembly.
2. Insert your finished assembly.
3. Preferably offset a plane that does not interfere with the assembly. This makes things easier to see.
4. Ctrl+pick the assembly and the plane > Insert Components.
5. In your "components to mirror checkboxes, check the top level assembly AND make sure to check the parts you want to mirror.

After finishing the mirrored assembly, use SW Explorer to rename the mirrored parts and assembly because they will have the "mirror" prefix. Even though you have to re-create the mates, all of the parts are mirrored in one fell swoop. Keep in mind that some parts will not have to be mirrored, so simply just don't pick those in the checkbox and insert it later into the mirrored assembly.

I have done this with 1 top-level assembly and parts, but haven't tried this with 1 top-level assembly that contained sub-assemblies.

You could also save your assembly as a part file, and mirror the part file. However, I don't know if you'd keep any associativity with the original non-mirrored assembly by doing so. (Might be worth a shot.)
