Hi - could someone tell me the purpose of a Meter Station with respect to a oil/gas gathering system.

Simple. It is primarily the cash register for custody transfer of a product.

Secondaryily, it can be used for flow control.

That flow control mentioned by 1969grad it is verry important both for reservoir & surface engineering field management team.
