Metal building abutting masonry wall 1

Working on a project where there is a small office building abutting a metal building warehouse, The office building is has all masonry exterior bearing walls. The some of the metal building columns are up against the masonry. How do you handle the drift of the metal building against the masonry wall?

Unless there are seismic requirements for drift checks and wall separation, I would simply set the PEMB columns far enough away to not clash with the masonry under the controlling horizontal load.

This is of course assuming that the masonry building is quite rigid.

If the PEMB is existing and the office building is new, then you will have to estimate the PEMB drift. Estimate liberally and set the new building clear.

You can hinge the bottoms of the masonry walls and tie the tops of the walls to a big girt connected to the PEMB. That will allow the wall to follow the motion of the PEMB. Put joints in the wall where the PEMB isn't to isolate the movement.
