Are you applying material for analysis purpose or for tracing pictures??
If you are applying material properties you can´t see it visually, use information -> body
If you are using it for tracing pictures you need to first choose trace method and then start shading

You must be in "Studio Dispay" mode, not just "Shaded" view mode. You can find the silver ball icon on the View toolbar.
