MATERIAL SELECTION FOR API-650 TANK

Hi all,

I have to design a new API tank, and i'm not sure which is the suitable material for my service. My service conditions are:
Product: Crude
Pressure: Atm
MIN / Max temp: 0 / 93ºC

I have seen that in other projects our client they have used the material A573 Gr70, but in this case they propose us A36.

I would like to know if there is information about this

Depends on the thickness, design metal temperature and many other criteria. Best to have an expert do this...
 
tMaybe I'm a refinery snob but I don't see A-36 used for much other than structural steel. I'm pretty sure my mechanical engineers for a couple of heavy coker gas oil and slop oil tanks specified A-516 (not sure of the grade). Their opinion is that the cost premium is minor and you get a much higher quality steel for minimal, if any, additional cost. It's similar to A283 Gr C, I've seen it referenced on older data sheets but I've never seen it allowed for pressure vessels or tanks even when I graduated (far too many years ago).

Let me see if I can get some additional background for you.
 
A36 is a very common grade for API 650 tanks. If it is suitable it is usually the least expensive. A573-70 is a great steel, strong and tough but using it requires that many if not all of the nozzles be pre-assembled into shell plates and PWHT. Again, an expert can help you. If you care to, post your tank diameter, height, location, product density, corrosion allowance and we can give better advice.
