I am trying to update my material database for all of you to use.
I have not had much time to look up material info, so I'm asking for help.
If you have a material that you would like me to add, please email me the info as needed in IPS (inch, pound, second) units. It's easier for me to add all of them per one unit.
Thank you.
The format I need is per the following example:

[blue]Classification - Aluminum alloys
Material name - Alum 2011
Texture - machined\brushed\cast\etc
Other texture/color info is special.
Physical properties
EX "Elastic modulus" value=70326525952.00000
NUXY "Poisson's ratio" value=0.330000
ALPX "Thermal expansion coefficient" value=0.000023
DENS "Mass density" value=2823.349854
KX "Thermal conductivity" value=142.100006
C "Specific heat" value=962.780029
SIGXT "Tensile strength" value=379211648.00000
SIGYLD "Yield strength" value=296474560.00000[/blue]

Hey Chris,
Can you copy/add the SW materials into your database so we can have just one master file to map too?

Hi Colin,
Yes, this is what I am asking for. I will combine everyone's materials into one database.
When I get a few, I will update it and post it.
If none...no updates.
Thanks!

Do you have a date in mind? We have a lot of things going on and I wouldn't want to miss the opportunity. Finding time is always the challenge but I'm likely to put it off too long if I don't have a due date.

Thanks.

Chris,
I thought of one to add. How about material for a PCB? I don't know the specific materials the EE's use, but would great to add the database.

Chris,

One thing I was thinking about that might be cool is to have two versions of these file. One within the current SolidWorks style where the material names are fairly colloquial. And, one where the names are in CAPS and more precise, perhaps mentioning the material #. The second version could be used to pull into custom properties and used directly on drawings via links annotation notes. Or maybe just use the proper names and #'s (and therefore correcting all of the SW names too). Whatcha think?

I would just keep it simple for now Chris. Let's us test drive it and then add to it down the road. Just my thoughts...

This is how I would like to see the data base:

Example:

ALUMINUM ALLOY (WROUGHT)
ALUM AL 2024
ALUM AL 5052
ALUM AL 6061-T6
ALUMINUM ALLOY (CAST)
ALUM AL C355
ALUM AL A356
ETC....

All uppercase would be great because most of us use uppercase and will show up in the Parts list/BOM's.

Harold,
No time frame. This is dynamic. I will update as materials come in.

Matt & Colin,
Great ideas.
If I can get some materials, I can populate the database, then how about we go over it and go from there? It's not hard to change it or split into separate databases.

Colin,
If you can find the PCB info, I will add it. I have been thrown into a project for the next couple weeks.

Thanks!

Chris,
I'm working on it with the PCB designers. I'll let you know the material once they reply to my email. What would be really cool is to have a general material density with the plastic and copper (board layers) calculated.

A star for you for working on this.

I have issues with MatWeb on my laptop. My work has strict guidelines and they block MatWeb.
I have to look at it at home.
Thanks.

For those that are not familiar with the SolidWorks material database, attached is an example screen shot of what I'm looking for.

I heard from our PCB designer. He said FR-4 is used as well as G10 that Dustin mention. I guess there's a ton of variations of these materials. Best thing to do is just select a generic materials for G10 and FR-4 and just use that. The PCB designer said to follow IPC 4101 specification.

Yeah, I had that problem too. Just go to the home page and type in G10, and go from there

Still working on it.
Some 2008 info does not work in 2007.
Will keep you posted. :)
