In an assembly, can you mate 2 parts by their reference planes?? I basically have a pin and a flat plate that I want to weld together but I am having problems assembling them together. The pin is not tangent to the plate so I need to use an offset mate from the center of the pin to one side of the plate....

Yes you can set relationships to geometry, reference planes and derived planes. RMB on the part it the feature tree and click Show/Hide Component and then pick reference planes. Do this for both parts. You should then be capable of picking mate for the planes you want.

Thanks

I also just found the "Construction Display" button to the left of the "Relationship List" box.... this allows you to turn on and use the reference planes while mating.... So many little hidden commands in this software!.... By the way, I'm using V15, not sure if this applies to newer versions???
