Mastercam X2 1

Hey I'm using Mastercam X2 and Solidworks and I downloaded the add in for direct to solidworks at the mastercam website and I still can't open native solidworks files to show up in mastercam. Do I have to do something in solidworks to get it to work?

No, the only thing that you will have to do is set your X Y & Z datums in MasterCAM.

I just downloaded and installed it and it works fine for me.

Did you select Mastercam Direct in the Tools > Add-ins section? Select both checkboxes if you want it activated in every SW session.

Since you are still having trouble, have you called your MasterCAM reseller to have them trouble shoot the issue?

When I do this I don't make a solid part all I want is the 2D Sketch and all x,y,and z geometry. It seems to only work with solids and I don't want that. I do save as dxf or dwg, but you cant get the z geometry i want on it.

X,Y and Z geometry makes 3D not 2D. How can you get Z geometry from a 2D (X-Y) sketch? Do you actually want a 3D wireframe!?

The whole point of MastercamX Direct is so that native MCAD solids can be imported.

I don't understand why you want/need this but, can MastercamX convert a solid to wireframe after it is imported?

The thing is all I need is a 2D sketches to make the programs I just don't want to add or modify geometry after I import a .dwg to mastercam. Im pretty new to this an don't have much experience in either software. So tell me if I'm being dumb. lol! I just figured you can import any thing you do in solidworks straight to mastercam, but I guess I was wrong. Regardless of 3D sketches.

What kind of part are you exporting from SW to MasterCAM? Is it a machined part or sheetmetal?

Machined I'm cutting a horizontal slot with a radiused bottom so it plunges down to a depth and follows the slot and the radius up and down again to a specifed depth at the end of the slot.

You should be able to import SolidWorks part files.

The SWx part has to have a solid not a sketch only. I would just import a DXF/DWG file. But really just make a solid with a small Z value and just define the tool path when you get into MasterCAM. I think you're making this harding than it really needs to be. I would suggest taking some training in MasterCAM...otherwise you might make some ugly marks on the vise

If you are happy with the DWG or DXF files, you can probably open them directly into Mastercam. You may not have to go through SolidWorks.

I can get it to import native solidworks solids. I just save my 2D drawing as a dxf or dwg and then I import that to mastercam and I just did a translate 3D xform and I moved my geometry where I wanted it and it worked. Unless you know another way, but that seems the best way so far I'll ask around the office for more advice soon. Again I'm a young inexperienced engineer and I'm still learning.

I'm happy it worked for you.
You should be able to import the SW part without the extra step of dwgs and DXF. But, I have not used MasterCAM.
