Does anyone know any website that talk about geotechnical aspects of constructing man made islands?
thanks,

I'm sorry, I have no web sites handy, but there is a wealth of information in the literature about man-made islands - many of the drilling platforms in the Beaufort Sea in Canada are on such islands. Golders did a lot of work on this as well. Try a search on google of: man-made islands Beaufort Sea.

does anyone know they construct man made island?

I would suggest to anyone to have a check on the site indicated by SlideRule Era.
Incredible projects which involve man made islands in the overall shape of the earth's continents and of palms.
I recently saw a TV service on it, absolutely awesome!
Presently, Dubai's real estate industry is booming, lots of investments switched from Hong Kong and elsewhere to there.
Also I would like to remind Hong-Kong airport in on a man-made island, as well as another similar project in Japan, and the idea is spreading (makes sense to create new estate on water).

If I recall correctly, an airport in Japan was constructed on a purpose-built island. Osaka, I think.

Issues include settlements due to the marine sediments that the placed material sits upon. The documentary about the airport indicated that the columns for the terminal structure were designed to be individually jacked up at the base in order to prevent distress due to differential settlements. Computers were used to monitor elevations at various points around the foundations so as to provide an indication of which columns needed jacking and how much.

Japan probably leadds the world in "building land".

Port of Kobi (offshore Kobi) is a small city, and the Osaka airport is on another man-made island in the same bay.

DISCOVERY Channel, I believe, has at least one documentary dedicated to the Osaka airport (the parts I recall were well done and interesting).

Manmade islands can be built from many materials. The critical thing is the amouring on the outside.
I was involved with one about 1km of the coast in the Clyde Estuary in Scotland It was in about 20 m of water.
It was basically dredged sand in a pile delivered by suction dreger and a 18' pipeline, a geotextile layer on the outside and some rock armouring, rocks were about 2 to 3 ft size.On more exposed locations the external rocks get larger I think up to about 5 tons each if I remember. The outer layers with progressively smaller rocks in layers below and of course geotectiles to prevent washout of fines.
The island in Scotland was a temporary facility to build oil platforms.I do not know how long it lasted or if its still there.
Prepakt Honk kong and Gammon International did the original site investigation for the Honk Kong airport so I am sure we still have some files somewhere.

Check the Discovery channel on TV - they have a couple shows about that
