I am going to make a patterned cut for spokes in a wheel. I hit cut>extrude>both sides>done>sketching plane is top>then okay>now I need to make the sketching refrencr..bottom>make datum>through and that is where i get stuck...through what

You are probably trying to make a radial pattern. You need to make a datum plane THROUGH an axis that is perpendicular to the sketching plane and that also runs through the center hub of the spokes and at an ANGLE through one of the datum planes that is perpendicular to the sketching plane.
