for example in this AssociativeText <WRef1*0@DESIGN_NAME> I need the start and end angles for
identifying an occurance of an AssociativeText> inside a regular text line so I can extract it
and do my manipulation on it with a my journal

When is "never" ?
Note that Unigraphics started life somewhere back in the 60-70's .
I think you can rely on that the associative text is inside < >. At least a couple of years from now. It has been around as long as I can remember.
How long will your Journal be used ?
