Resistance to fragmentation with Los Angeles machine : is there any standard specifying min acceptable values for different jobs (i.e., stock yards for light or heavy weight, urban roads, highway, etc) ?
ASTM C131/C131M (2014) Standard Test Method for Resistance to Degradation of Small-Size Coarse Aggregate by Abrasion and Impact in the Los Angeles Machine
Also, we have this language in our pavement's subbase/base course specs:
Material retained on the 4.75 mm sieve shall have a percentage of wear not to
exceed 50 percent after 500 revolutions when tested as specified in
ASTM C131/C131M. At least 50 percent by weight retained on each sieve
shall have one freshly fractured face with the area at least equal to 75
percent of the smallest midsectional area of the piece. Aggregate shall
be reasonably uniform in density and quality.
Many are now going to the micro-deval abrasion test. It is preferred to the hydro engineers of whom I know as the most appropriate for concrete aggregates.
