LOOKING FOR LOCK/UNLOCK SWITCH

Anyone know of some info I could look over regarding an electrical switch that would lock under a little stress but would need to be capable of holding a very heavy load (not an electrical load but pressurized/weight load)...it would need to release under the heavy load as well. The rod it would need to lock and hold is strictly linear motion. The concern is it being able to release. Any such switch exist?

Well that would not technically be a "switch" because switch is implying that it is switching an electrical circuit. You are talking about a mechanical device that is electrically operated. I would look at a solenoid operated mechanism, but I know of nothing specific here. It will depend on the nature of your "rod" to a certain extent. For example, can the rod have grooves or teeth in it? If so, a simple cam operated toothed pawl would work, with an electric solenoid to release it.

You may also want to look at linear actuators and/or linear brakes. Different technology, but it may be what you are after.
