Looking for a shock absorber/damper to slow/stop 1.3K ft.lb.

Hi,
I have a mechanical system that produces 1,300 ft.lbs of energy. I'd like to absorb this energy in 10-15 inches of stroke. In my mind I'm seeing an auto type shock absorber, but there maybe other products out there. Can someone recommend a product that can dampen this much energy?

I don't want any springs in the system. The energy is derived from a 500 lb mass which falls approximately 30 inchs. At the end of the fall, it is desirable that the weight completes the entire stroke with negligible rebound.

Any and all help will be appreciated.

How often is the device going to have to absorb the shock?

This system would cycle once, wait about 15 minutes, and then cycle again. The number of cycles would be approximately 50-100 for the life of the hardware.

Mandrake22 and Unclesyd, Thanks for the links. This is just the kind of stuff I was hoping for. I haven't been through all the links yet. I'm hoping there is a little "How to size" info and example applications in there.
